cd back up problem

help......
trying to back up the sims on cd, but when i load the cd in my drive i get "unable to read cd, maybe scratched or fingerprints" etc, it works to play but not to back up, i am a complete novice to this so i assume i am doing something wrong?? my drives are ...........dvd drive---samsung dvd-rom sd616f. and hpdvdwriter 100j.
apparently this is a top system, and the drives were already built in to my pc, the software was also built in and is HP record now

i have made a few music cd's and these worked fine but i am stumped on this

can anyone help me??

regards
