I generally stick to 2x or 4x because anything faster than that makes my computer crash. It really is a piece. I have plenty of games i've had burnt at 24x that work fine though. They work both on my Playstation, and Playstation 2 glitch free, but I suppose if you go too fast it might miss something or write it incorrectly.
