data is data for the PS2, it doesn't matter AT ALL if it's on CD, DVD, or ripped from DVD to CD.
there's no way it could physically damage the laser unit. laser is light, nothing physically touches the CD/DVD.
as said above, the TOC limit comes from the GS/Region X only having a ~640 MB TOC. if they were pressed on 700 MB CDs, all games would work.
