Input on Double Density Disks

ok....I want to know what is the difference between a regular DVD disk and Double Density DVD disk. I know the capacity is a lot larger, but do you need a special type of bruner/writer to write this type of disk? If so, what mdoels of writers can do this? Thanks for your help!
