http://www.cdmediaworld.com/hardware/cdrom/cd_writers.shtml#Introduction
Useful general info. Install CloneCD before you get a writer, if you wish to backup Plasyation/DC stuff - there's quite a bit of help, and a table of which writers/readers work best. The Plextor models always come highly rated, and you can get a good deal on one if you go to a computer fair. In the UK a good source is the Northern Computer Fair: http://www.computermarketsonline.co.uk/ The fair are also a great place to buy just about every brand of media produced, eg verbatim 80min for 40p/60cents each (cased). I have recently purchased a Traxdata CDWR8432+ (£99/$150). It's an 8x model with a 2MB buffer and 32x read speed. Iv'e got no complaints, and Iv'e been able to do some Dreamcast backups using my Toshiba CD-ROM in RAW read mode. Obviously I can only speak from personal experience, but I haven't had any worries with the 300+ discs Iv'e already burned on my old Cyrix 333+ system, but other people may have better suggestions for you. Hope this helps in some small way :-) |
