I have just a CD writer and not DVD but I've found that all games copy obviously providing the original copy of the game is on CD (it says it on the back of the box)
The only games that I have found so far that do need patching are EA ones. EA patches are downloadable or use the EA Patcher (worked for me 1 out of 1 try)
