dvd burning question...

I have a CD-Burner, but my DVD player isn't in the computer, it's a stand alone one.

If I want to burn dvd's without using a dvd burner, can I just stick the dvd into my cd-rw, rip it to my hard drive then burn it to a dvd-r, or do I have to have the dvd player in my pc to rip it ?

you need a DVD Rom to read and rip the DVD, and a DVD-R Burner to burn it. as your CD-R will not do anything for you for DVD Ripping / Recording.
