does neo 2.2 fry your lazer? what about neo key?

just sold a psx2 with a neo key fitted worked perfect. going to chip another psx2 with neo 2.2 for a bit pratice. do you require a capacator & resistor fitted to pin 2 to protect the lazer, or is this just rubbish? advice gratefull
