Help with a few games

Hello everyone, I've been around for a while, but never posted, but I need some help, I can't figure these out

there are a few games I need help with. First off my friend wanted to buy The Sims (original) however she wanted to make sure it worked on her computer before she bought it, so I tried my backup on her PC. When I tried to play it, it closes and goes back to her windows desktop. The same CD works fine on my PC. It installs ok, and when she loads the game, the MAXIS screen will come up and the intro video will play with sound, but when it comes time to go to the Neighborhood screen, it dumps back. I've gone thru the Troubleshooting guide, and checked everything it says in there (except for updating the video card, which she was doing when I left) Can anyone thing of any reason other than the video drivers needing to be updated? She is running DirectX 7.1 (7 is required) and she meets all of the system requirements. I also tried closing EVERYTHING else she had open (except for Systray and Explorer)

AND

Is there a way to change the screen size of the menus in Empire Earth? My max screen size is 800X600, so the menus are all scrambled, however the game itself runs fine. Is this due to the patch I've used, or do I have to actually buy a bigger monitor just to see the menus?
