well, what you got is a japanese ps2, which will of course only play japanese games. the early modchip you mention is most likely one of the neo type chips, which ONLY work for cdr copies.. no chance to play imports.
currently the only available chip to play original imports is the origa. you can check for info at www.origachip.com, and can order it from i.e. lik-sang.com. the installation is quite hard to do, so consider having a professional do it.
