Guess it was my post you read, in your situation you should be able to play D2X with no cd, try it. For your info I have a shortcut on my desktop to Dload.exe in the Diablo directory, that's how I start my D2X game. Be advised that this works for single-player, maybe not for Bnet sessions. Enjoy, ronach.
