On DVD copying, the singular problem you face at the moment is that there is no DVD copying software that does the same job on PS2 DVDs as CLONECD and CDR-WIN do on PS2 CDs. I've not seen any pre-announcement either but as sure as eggs is eggs, it'll happen in due course.

So ripping DVD games is the only way of making backups from originals. If you've got the time etc, good luck.
