Newbie needs help with backup of Black & White & AVP

I am relativley new to computers & especially backing up games etc. I have been using Clone CD to be backing up my games. I have had no problems with making backups of Halflife, Homeworld etc but i have seemed to run into problems making copys of B&W and AVP. With B&W when i go thru the settings in clone cd (i always make an image on to the hard disk - never on the fly) and then get it to read the disk to ####t the copy, the time counter works, but none of the buffers or the main bar at the top seem to do anything, and stay at 0% for about 10 seconds until an error message comes up saying that it could not read the disk (with a number - possibly 217??) and it then ejects.
With AVP everything seems to be fine and it copys all wonderfully and ejects saying it has finished etc, but when i try to read the disk, the computer says there is an error reading the drive (like if there wasn't a disk in there), but after #####ing the underside of the disk, there is stuff burned onto it.

Any help with this problem will be much appreciated.
