Help with finding the name of a childhood game

1. It was an rpg that took place in a desert-like area, i can remember canyons

2. I seem to recall the game involved firearms as weapons of choice

3. The sprites for the overhead map of the game seemed to have the feel of possibly ff4

4. I don't recall it being 3d models of any sort in the battle screens.
