If it is given that this disc is indeed scratched/dirty, then all still might not be lost!
Try using isopropyl alcohol (record cleaner/tape head cleaner/clearasil blue liquid) to clean it - spray or drop a few drops onto the disc surface and wipe radially (ie. from the centre outwards NOT round and round) using a clean, soft cloth. When it is as clean as you can get it, try again.
I have managed to copy seemingly knackered discs from dubious sources with absolutely no errors!!
