By the sounds of it your not doing anything wrong, at least nothing major.
Unforntunately you burner is not fully campatable clone so you wont get a working backup of spyro 3 as none of the patches work either! But spyro 2 you can get by using CDRWin, PPF-O-Matic and a patch, all available from www.megagames.com.
