I'm no expert on this, but I have read that this can happen because of the laser. Please correct if I'm wrong, but to test if it is the laser you can play the game with your playstation upside down, that is sitting on its lid, and see if the fmv sequences run any better. If they do then write back and someone on the forum will be able to give you some further advice i'm sure.
