Java is a programming language. Not only large, serious, stand-alone applications, but also small programs called "applets" can be written in it that are meant to be run inside a browser. For download, see http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/index.html - you most probably need the latest JRE (not JDK!) of Java SE. To see what version you have, launch the java -version command.
