It sounds like you have two problems.
Firstly I chipped a ps1 with a standard four wire chip. Mine worked fine with backups, but would not work with original games. I got the red screen that you talk about, very strange. After much surfing I found the answer. Most of the 4 wire wiring diagrams appear to be incorrect. Ifinally used the one shown at www.modchips-uk.com which is actually a three wire and one link wire diagram. After this all was well, and I've had no problems scince.

Secondly some patch people alter the boot record (the black playstation logo screen) to incorporate ther name. This part of the boot up image carries the region code,in old psx machines this was not a problem as when chipped the machine bypassed this check. The ps1 checks this segment on all games wether chipped or not,and this being modified tells the playstation that the game is not of an acceptable region,so no boot.
you can get around this two ways firstly use an import player boot disc,or after applying the patch to fix the copy protection then apply aboot up fix for the correct region for your machine. Both these items can be downloaded from the psx utilites pages at megagames.com
Hope this has made things a bit clearer for you.
Enjoy
