The patch 1.4 doesn't have protection - checked with PiD.
When you buy the game you must register yourself as a game owner in the official website. When you patch, it goes online and check if you're an owner - if you're not registered then you must do it or you can't patch. The protection removed in the patch is like a gift for the owners. If you buy the new Enhanced Edition, then you have the solidshield protection and you need the crack.
