The olde no background pic, minimal visual settings etc will free up RAM.
You could also sift through the things that XP loads by using msconfig :P |

Apologies for the thread necromancy, but this can be achieved easily via a .reg file (plus a restart for the service changes to take effect). Attached is an example taken from eXPerience's minimalist Windows setups which should provide a useful starting point (after decompressing, rename it from .txt to .reg).
