The Rockbox firmware has an incredible amount of configuration options and functions. For my iRiver iHP-140, I found that its factory firmware has about third the functionality of the Rockbox firmware - of course, this is additional, the basic funcionality of a directory browser, audio player etc. is present in both.
My principle now is that you shouldn't buy devices (MP3 players, stand-alone DVD players etc.) from big brands (Apple, Panasonic, Sony etc.) automatically anymore. There are lots of small brands that fight for survival (more) and, therefore, their devices are more user friendly, have more functionality and are more compatible with home-made stuff (self-encoded MP3's, DVD's, DivX/XviD-rips). Otherwise, without any obvious advantage, they couldn't sell them...
