It could very well be the laser. Also when you chip the console you open it up and mess with stuff inside...an essential part might of been tipped, moved or damaged....you never know since all these electronics are so delicate. I had a friend who chipped his playstation and not only didnt it not play copied games afterwards, it didnt even play originals unless the console is turned upside down.
