You see, I bother neither with original or backed up CD's; I make rips of my games: large RAR archives that need to be uncompressed only, no installation needed. And since DVD's are physically so large but are (relatively) so slow and can contain so little data, they have been archived to a very large hard disk instead. With a USB hard disk rack, this means about half a minute to access ANY game in my collection (from Test Drive in 1987 to STALKER in 2007), whenever I like. How about that for organizing?

@rlsuth: Ts-ts-ts, I have two hard disks (one at home, another at my work place).
Remember: one backup is no backup at all!@caki: MP3/UHA and other tricks are for packaging warez releases to as small sizes as possible - and, as a side effect, that makes the unpacking VERY long. For me, size doesn't matter (khm ) but unpacking time does so, no, I don't do extra compression steps.

since hdds getting cheaper all day...doing it the same way but mostly with(out)minimal compression, just a backup copy-in-a-rar. this speeds up the entire process a lot. time is money
