If your getting problems with the BIOS try changing the battery. It could be that thats resetting your BIOS settings every power-up.
But with the hanging, and missing NTLDR messages, it could be the HD is not 100%. If you are going to reformat, make sure its a full format and not quick.

The PC's at my work do this all the time, randomly it seems. I load the windows install disk and choose to repair with the chkdsk utility. That usually fixes the issue.
