After messing about a bit I've found the culprit to be ZoneAlarm!
If I shutdown ZoneAlarm the game does not freeze at the menu now, If I enable ZoneAlarm it freezes! If I use the 'Engage Internet Lock' function it still freezes, I have to 'Shutdown ZoneAlarm' and then the game does not freeze? First time I've had a problem with ZoneAlarm though. Feel better now I know it wasn't a hardware or nvidia driver problem!
