USB Extreme

is it possible to create a copy of the usb extreme disk and then use it on an unmodded ps2 slim? I searched the forums and haven't find any info on the usb exteme. Has anyone used this product and if you have, how do you feel about it. I sold my modded Ps2 (messiah pro 2) with internal hard drive that held around 30 games that I booted with hdadvance. I really miss being able to shelf the original disks and play from the hard drive. I don't want to mod my slim unless I really have to. I'm about to order the usb extreme disk and wanted some opinions on it first to see if it really does work. I would like to shelf that disk also and just use the copy.

the slim usb ports are not 2.0 so the speed from the usb port will be slower than reading from the disc itself you would be better off geting a used original ps2 and put a hard drive in that also the usb loaders and no where as compatible as hd loader or hd advance

Ok, thanks for your honest answer. Would it be possible to use a copy of hd advance or hd loader on an unmodded ps2? Is there some way to use backups without a mod chip or swap method. Like an exploit or something?

I understand that running games from a hard drive attached to a ps2 slim will run slower than actually having the disk in. But I have 2 children ages 4 & 5 that play the ps2 and I'd rather not have them mess with the disks. I'm going to be placing my order for the USB Extreme next week, it will cost me $35.
I still have my old hard drive from when I had my old ps2 modded. I used a back up of hdloader. Would that hard drive work in an external enclosure with USB Extreme with the games I had already installed? I am also wondering if USB Extreme could boot gameshark, codebreaker or ar max from the hard drive then run one of the installed games.

the compatibility of usb extreme is so low that its not worth the $35 to buy it

your best bet is to mod the system and let your kids use copied discs and keep the originals stored away

if your still determined to use usb extreme the old hd in the external case will work fine

also you might want to trade in the slim ps2 for a non-slim ps2 at game stop and use hdloader

That answer was so obvious, I don't know how I missed it. Thanks Snake2. Swap the slim for a fat, put in the old hard drive and ethernet adapter and then buy hdloader. I just found hdloader for $17.95 shipped. I'm not sure why I didn't think of that, freakin' brilliant. The only real problem, is finding a fat ps2. Game Stop will buy it for $55 then sell me a refurbished fat ps2 for $95. Same as Electronics Boutique. Thanks alot man for the inspiration.

glad i could help also also the patched hdloader that you run from your memory card is more compatible than the disc that you buy

you may want to set up your ps2 with the ps1 game exploit and run hdloader from the memory card that way you can just leave the ps1 game in the drive to boot hdloader and the kids will still not have to touch the discs

I'm trying to avoid putting in a mod chip. I'm not really trying to pay alot of money this time around. They're nice to have, but they aren't easy to install if you don't have the skills or know somone who could do it. As far as the memory card exploit, I have everything ready except for a way to get it on the memory card. I guess there isn't a way to get it on there with just a 1 gig thumb drive huh? I either have to get a mod chip or some or thing to spend money on like swap magic or action replay max.

I'm sure your local console shop can help you with installing a mod chip...

I was only trying to help because I don't see any reason to not use a modchip. You wrote you don't have the skills and you don't have people around you who could do it either. Okay, but there's surely a console shop where you A) bought the console or B) buy games; you could ask them about installing a modchip. As for the money part, I think you might realize that other solutions are more annoying than having a modchip and therefore a modchip is more worth its price than other hacks. All in all, I still believe you're wasting your time with trying to collect information with other solutions... But it's your life so good luck with it!

As for your style, it's time for you to read forum rule #7. An advice: your insults don't go unnoticed!

Well if the shoe fits....It IS stupid to waste time attempting a exploit on a console when it wont work to start with. Its also stupid to pay $35 for USB extreme or HD loader when HD loader is FREE to the public, if you know where to look . Even if you have a older console the MC exploit isnt 100% and a crap choice for playing backups. A smart guy would buy a Modchip considering many are under $20 bucks then send it to www.norcalmods.com for the install. It may cost you a total of $60 bucks. Better this than spending $35 on a crap swapdisc then having problems because most games are not compatable.

BTW, Joe Forster is a Moderator here. He was trying to help. If you react to other replys the way you did his you may want to look elsewhere for help!!

If you go into any store that sells consoles and ask them any information on mod chips or how to install them, what do you really think they would say. When I feel my intelligence is being insulted I will get very hostile. No one should blame me for reacting the way I did. I also belong to a online car club, and when a noob comes on and asks questions, sometimes the guys on there can be dicks. They will tell the noob to make sure he checks his turn signal fluid, that is more or less what I got when I asked what I did from you. I admit that my knowledge of PS2 exploits is close to nothing. My first PS2 had a messiah pro 2 installed by a tv repair man. I paid 60 for the chip and 60 for the install. I lost interest in playing games and got a life. Have a hot wife and 4 kids. Now my children are into gaming so what I do, I do for them. I found another more helpful site which I'm sure a lot of you guys also belong to. It's weird that some of the same guys from here are there, and that place seems more adult. So in the immortal words of Dr. Dre "You diss Dre, you diss Yourself"

Apparently, you have tried too big shops. (Or haven't tried any and are just guessing...) In small shops, selling and/or installing modchips is perfectly normal as it is part of the income necessary to keep themselves in business. I had absolutely no problems with finding a friendly (small, Hungarian) shop to install a modchip (ordered from the USA) into a PS2 I bought in a completely different (big, Hungarian) shop. How about that?

In this thread, three out of three people advised you to drop your initial idea and get a modchip instead because it's much better than using exploits. (Especially, if you mean this console to be used by your kids: the more transparent the method, the easier for them to use it!) You received the best answer that forum members could come up with: it was pointed out that you're probably on the wrong track and the reason was also more or less shown. Why that is a problem for you, why you feel it as an insult, I have no idea... Perhaps, we are too constructive or helpful for your standards, not answering your question blindly but offering more able alternatives instead...?!
