If you don't want to open/mod your system I'd say use a hard drive and network adapter (assuming you have a old PS2). Hdloader will allow you to load most PS2 games. You can't use PS1 games with it, however. Also, there is a program to allow using a usb hdd. If you don't want to use a hdd, try searching knife trick. You only need to remove the front of the dvd tray to do this. Also search memory card exploit and cog swap. I hope this gives you some direction as where to start. One more thing: if you're using a slim PS2 swap method is easy and you don't have to buy tools to be able to swap (you can make them).
