I just tried some sort of a swap trick and suddenly my PS2 made some sort of buzzing noise and I smelled something burnning!!!
What the ####? Could it be something fried inside my PS2?

Can't smell it from here. But sorry to hear of your trouble. Presumably you were going to try Cheesy's suggestion with an import original.

You've had the PS2 chipped and I hope you have a good relationship with the fitter. But ifirst, take the cover off (he'll have to do this) and look for an obvious area or go to the place with the most burning smell. Also look for something that might have floated around, like a washer.

Charlie, Good intuition! I WAS trying Cheesy's thing, only not with the action reply, but with the DVD Region X (Thought it might work).
Anyway, I haven't opened the cover yet, But the smell faded out fast and the Console is working. Is there any chance it would work if something is wrong?

Pleased that PS2 works now. I'd still open up and have a look as I advised. If there's no obvious sign to alarm you (and a burn smell location would linger for a while), then it is possibly OK. But I can't give you definitive advice that the PS2 is OK.

As a guide, in my (don't rely on it) opinion, 5V circuits don't produce a burning smell; it would have to draw more current than the mains could supply. 50V and upwards can.

My son reminds me that a couple of months ago, we had a similar scare. When we investigated it appeared that the power supply unit (which is external on our Jap PS2) - the glue had melted that holds the box together. We left well alone as it was extewrnal to the PS2. It may well be that you play with your PAL PS2 horizontal and the glue in the internal PSU (it is internal isn't it?) has also melted. Do open up and have a look.

I think you need to expose the power supply unit and sniff around there. If you're cool that it works, then fine - let it go. If you need to know, open it up, have a sniff, note what you need to, screw it back together.

Hi,

Just to add on from what Charlies has said, be very carefull when taking your ps2 apart the reset and power button ribbon cables are verly delicate and can break easierly, and you can find yourself in deep sh*t.

Just take your time is my best advice and only take apart stuff you really need to.

Thanks Dal, But I've decided not to open the PS2 at all. I haven't had any problems since the... Ahem... Incident, so I figured that I shouldn't try and deal with it.
I'd be happy to hear what you think, tell me if I'm doing right or should I open the PS2 anyway?

If its not giving you any more problems then DONT open it. I had my PS2 on all day last week in the office and after a few hours there was a slight smell, nothing to worry about NEW electrical goods which are on for long periods of time do sometimes pong. Ive had a new pc monitor stink for the first few days of use before it was okay, at one point i thought Dell had given me a free dead cat in my monitor caseing LOL.........

.... or the feeling that the restaurant has just served the cat up in the curry. I saw an Indian Restaurant in Jaffa a few years ago - didn't see a single cat on the street. Are cats Kosher? Dal asked me to ask you this.

Anyway, open the PS2 and satisfy yourself. It's dead simple but ity's something like this based on my PS2:

1/
Turn PS2 upside down with the back away from you and the power to your right rear. Remove the rubber covers from th screw holes named below.

2/
Undo the middle rear and right hand rear screws
Undo the four screws on the lip below the underside

3/
Turn the PS2 right way up so that it faces you horizontally as if for play. Carefully lift the cover up from the left and hinging to the right (where the disk is). You'll see the ribbon cable that DAL mentioned but it won't be in any danger if you do everything slowly.

4/
The power supply is at the rear to the left. Sniff around there or look for melted glue. Look anywhere else that could get hot (it won't be the DVD drive so I shan't excplain which screws to take out there).

5/
Satisfy yourself, wash your hands, put the thing back together again.
