Getting an error sometimes on ICD file is not a good sign.
Since your getting it sometimes there may be a problem with either memory or hard disk. Do you have problems with any other games?

just a side not, i think the latest patch (2.0c ???) eliminates all protection, meaning u should be able to play without your cd, also, AOE not found is a common problem on ZONE, try gamespy arcade, if it still doesnt work (similar error message) then it's a common registry problem that aoe2 has with some and yes a format fixed it for my fiancee but its up to you if its worthed the hastle.
