Just so I understand right, with this method do I need to unplug my drives or not?

You must unhook your drives.this will just help you to make image that can be recognised as valid by starforce

Same thing as nothing, it was already recognized; and unhooking is just too bothersome.(too much dust to leave case open and too much of a hasle to unhook, hook a lot) .
