One major mistake some people tend to do is have more than one type of security program running at the one time.
I have had to fix machines that had virii and serious spyware/malware due to the owner having either 2 or more AV's running or 2 or more AntiSpyware running. They always conflict with each other and let things slip that otherwise may have been picked up.
