You seem to think there is a "general" method for this.... well there isnt. If you knew what chip you had we would be able to tell you what to do.
What version is your PS2? When abouts did you have this chip installed? Who installed it?
A lot of low end chip can be disabled by holding reset until you see the "Sony Entertainment" screen appear. But if its lets say a Duo2/SE in a V9-V10 then you will hold reset until the split second before you see the "Sony Entertainment screen". Now if its a high end chip like the ....... oh forget it!Figure out what you have and if you care post what you find here.
