About heating problems:
It will very rarely occur if you do not mod your xbox chassis drastical. I have never encountered it atleast. Perhaps some hdd's that you can use will produce a lot of heat. The problem you are describing could be because of IDE cable issue. BUT it could also be due to dying HDD. Try changing the IDE cable and if the issue does not get solved try using the xbox open (without the cover on). If that fixes it, it is a heat issue. If it does not it is the hdd going cr*p on you.

mmm, i really don't think so. But, you could try using a different dashboard to see if the ftp still disconnects. I mean, The HDD's heats to about 114f I think. So, how hot does your dash say it is?
btw, the INIT problem shouldn't be a problem with the HDD. Usually a dvd-drive problem. If you don't have a disk in the drive, then it should say init. I should warn you though. If the HDD is in fact dying, you'd better unlock it from the eeprom before it dies. And if you have xbl, backup the HDD information and don't go online with it unlocked
