Yeah changing PID is mainly for when serials wont work.

Each company like DELL, Compaq, HP etc have their own PID for windows, and each PID determines how a CD-Key is designated.

My guess is he has a CD-key from a built machine from one of those companies and his copy of XP isnt taking the serial.
