You may have to install the latest display drivers again as if they were not on your system before the restore date then they wont be installed. Something along the lines anyway.

 I reinstalled BF2 and undated all drivers and it seem to have done the job. still cant work out what caused this problem but just glad to be able to play the game again. Many Thanks for the advice thou
