Also the german version has this online activation.
But you have to activae it only once after installation/re-installation. The game doesn't have a real copy protection, so you can play the game without dvd. The first update patch was/is available in two versions SILVER and GOLD. (GOLD = Silver + additional MultiPlayer-Maps = only for registered users.) I bought it, when it was released in germany, played it a while. It's quite heavy to solve the levels. And also the levels are that huge.... first level took me 4 hours of playing.
