What o/s are you running?
Win 95/98/Me will start defrag by simply typing 'defrag' on the Run screen (Click Start, Run). I usually solve buffer probs by droping burn speed by half. If it craps out at 8x, try it at 4x. Won't work at 4x? Then try it at 2x.
