trainers are as far as i know, totally safe, the worst that can happen is that the trainer doesnt work, you can get trainers from sites like gamecopyworld.com or megagames.com

My advice to you! Listen to your son! Not that I like to cheat when playing a game but a trainer (if you can find one for that game) will more than likely do exactly what your son has said.
