The new slimies were plagued with laser issues also.. I'm not sure if they've worked it out or not up at sony dumbquarters.. Eh.. You'll find most of us here keep our eyes out for V7's. They seem to be pretty reliable (although there is an acception to every situation). Ebay is a pretty good place to look for em.. You'll find people selling them often know their value and will post the version number 39001 or just plain old V7 in their title or description.
Don't pay too much though.

Lasers are still a bit pricey.. A new one installed (quoting spedmetal) is about 80 bucks. So thats more than half the price of a new retail slimline. I'm at odds with this issue right now.. I think i'm just gonna buy a spare hard drive and use it as a hard drive loader only machine.. Since I have a working V7 with an infinity chip. The dead laser machine is a v9 which i've already spent too much money in repairing.

Anyway good luck mate..

thank you very much guys. i brought it a few days ago to check and you were right with saying laser issue.

so my ps2 is messed up and i won´t buy a new laser. i wanna buy a new ps2.

but i gotta couple of questions:

can i use my old chip in the new one??
should i use my old chip or is there already a better one you would recommend?
and like neipas said a v7, not a slim, right?

Wasting money.

If the only problem you have with your PS2 is that laser then don't waste money, just replace it (it's 50 bucks, including shipping at rich's and the installation of the laser unit is a breeze, unless you can't do anything like that).
As others here said, slim ps2s have huge problems with backups and older ps2s just have no additional value at all, it's really the same thing.
With the money you save you could get a large HD to use with HDloader or get a Gamecube which cost nothing and can finally run backups as well (It's an excellent choice if you like platformers)
