Thumbs down Annoyed!

I've actually been having some problems with this darn game also.

I bought the game from a local Electronics Boutique store, as the internal packaging had a plastic box with the game cover on the front; inside it had the usual manual with the cd key information, whilst our version over here was in fact a DVD and not a multitude of CDs.

After frantically rushing home to try out the game, my LG4120B drive couldn't read the damn DVD; I thought at the time, perhaps there was something wrong on my end. So I ended up testing it on another PC, the same problem occurred, the drive failed to read the DVD and any of its internal contents as though it never existed.

Whilst being frustrated, I returned to the retail chain the following day and asked for another copy, this time; the drive detected the contents of the DVD and I was able to install it. After installing it, and placing the cd key into the Starforce protection window of the game; it scanned the presence of the disk and attempted to run the game.

When I mean attempted, I mean it ran the game with an open splash screen, then it went completely dark black for a few seconds and after some hard drive noise, the damn game spits itself back into the desktop of the O/S; blabbering about some failure "splintercell.exe has failed"

I thought at the time, it was yet again my system; I doubt very much it was, because the demo worked fine. I changed my highend graphics card, a PowerColor X800 Pro VIVO from Omega Clone (Cat 5.1) Drivers to the current ATI driver version 5.4 I think... still had problems. I updated the game with that stupid 77mb patch and nothing happened. I also ran a full diagnostic from the game's utility and it still failed to run.

Out of pure frustration, I decided to return the damn game and opted for another one

Anyways, sorry for the lengthy ranting; but I guess I could say I'm not particularly happy in terms on how things have turned out. The ability in not being able to play this awesome game.

Red face Scct

Well the team that succeeds in cracking this game will be considered GOD's
Going to be following this one closely.
Been involved in seing a lot of un-crackable games get cracked but this one is a doozy.

@ XtremeX I dont think tbaher mentioned HL2 in a cracking scence i think if you read his post again you will see he was refering to HL2 because of the way it's copy protection was implemented (STEAM). Wich opens up the debate about steam all over again.

Yea I know. I was just saying that even with it's copy protection (steam) it was cracked easily.

What I dont get is if Starforce is so hard to crack why dont more games use it? Its strange seeing new games coming out that people can easily crack & make a nocd patch for. I would have thought more companies would use starforce!!

Perhaps we are focusing on the wrong solution?

I think (and i dont know) but its down to cost. I assume SF3 is an expencive protection to implement, dev's cost and so on. Mabey thats why games like SCCT can afford it as they know its a safe bet they will shift lots of units making paying for it not such an issue. If there's more to it and anyone knows what exactly then i for one would be intrested to know.

Concerning steam i wouldnt say its a copy protection method as such, More a registering to allow activation of the product. Thats why a nocd etc was done so quickly as its not protected by SF3. I know its protection in one way but copy protection is exactly that and steam dose not make it any harder to back up your original etc. However i do dissagree in some ways that consumers are forced to go through the steam process to play the game and ...... actualy theres been more than enough debate about steam so im gonna leave it alone.

Talking

Someone on a forum say that :

"Omg I got it to work. Not sure why it worked because I really didnt try anything new. If you own the game please try this and report back. I successfully loaded the game from my backup that I created from my retail disk. The backup was loaded from my regular DVD-RW that is not USB. Here is what I did.

1: Created a Image with Alcohol 120% (lastest version). I read the RMPS at the lowest settings (Precision High), same for the data. Read at the lowest settings to prevent errors.

2: Now this is the wierd part. Burn the image at the lowest settings and DO NOT burn the RMPS data to the disk. I burned it to DVDR.

It took along time to get past the protection screen(even froze my pc for a few seconds) but it did load. I tested it with 1.0 and 1.01, both load."

Anyone can try,and tell us if this method works ?

Install SP2

That was the problem for my desktop. However my laptop ran it perfectly, with only SP1. *shrug*

@ CaffeineJunkie

Yeah I'm running SP1 whilst with all the updates from the m'soft site; i'm somewhat a little hesitant in running SP2, especially with all the firewall and network problems it has.. ah well.

Hopefully some one will crack this one soon and we all may benefit from it...
