My kid has both handhelds and I would have to say most smaller kids will like the DS better since it has more games fit for kids, plus as of right now the DS has a little bit larger game selection to choose from and the battery pack for the DS stays charged MUCH, MUCH, longer than the PSP's battery pack does, in my opinion this is a big plus for a handheld system since you might use it for long trips. The DS seems a little more user freindly in my opinion. The DS also seems more durable compared to the PSP. The DS might survive a little abuse but just from the look and feel of the PSP, I get a little nervous seeing it changing hands back and forth becuase I'm about 99% sure it would never survive the $250 drop.

On the other hand, I like using the PSP better simply becuase I like one screen gaming versus the 2 slightly smaller screens the DS has. I think the PSP seems to have better graphics in most of the games I've seen (so far) with the exception of maybe the Mario DS game and Asphalt: Urban (one of the not so great Racers with good graphics) are about on par with PSP games for the DS, as of now we only have 5 games for the PSP versus the dozen or so for the DS. Luminus, NFL Street2 Unleashed, Wipeout Pure, NFU Rivals, and THUG2 Remix is what I've seen to date for the PSP. I'm highly impressed with the graphics that Wipeout Pure and NFL Street2 Unleashed tote, very good for a portable although Wipeout Pure seems a little jittery. My kid has really taken a liking to the PSP in the short time we have owned it over the DS but his freinds that have seen both handhelds, as of now, seem to like the DS better, maybe becuase we have more games for it and you can just jump in and play without a load time.

Caution: If you plan on buying a PSP, I suggest buying a screen protector for it right from the start. It does not have a flip top lid to protect the screen so it might be easily damaged. If you get a DS I'd consider the same, although the sceen is built for pressing a pen pointer on it constantly I think it might be easy for someone to get carried away and scratch the screen with it anyway.

Being an adult I have a hard time getting into handheld games period. As far as I'm concerned I think I'm spoiled from P.C. gaming and I'd stick to P.C. games simply for the much better graphics and larger veiw.
