Well we all know what happens when you make a copy of a copy (ever see the movie Multiplicity with Michael Keaton)? Anyways, the brand is as important as the dye used to made the DVD-r. The dye brands go from G01 through G05, with G01 being the weakest dye. There is a program called DVD Info Pro. This program will tell you the quality of the dye of the disk you are using.

To further answer your earlier question, some people have different luck using middle of the road media types. I for one was given a bunch of TDK Dvd-r for Christmas. When I used DVD Info Pro it showed that these are only G01. I did some tests and backed up a game using the TDK as well as my Ritek. The only differences I saw was that the laser worked harder reading the G01 media. Also the backup did not auto load using the G01...the PS2 went to the browser first anf then from there I had to load it from the browser. The G05 Riteks booted up just as good as the original. Also with the lower grade dyes you may notice performance issues with sound, and FMV scenes. The best part about this is finding what works best for your specific burner and the chip you have installed. As far as Swap Crap Magic, you will notice that you can almost never load a game using that system and burning to a lower grade dye media.
