I actually have the original game and I too dont really play it much! I find it rather annoying actually. Its not really what I expected when I bought it. I find it gets a bit boring to tell you the truth.
Anyway back to the crack, I went off and played it again using the crack and yeh what a pain, when you get out off the basement it just resets!! It quits out to the menu again! Geez if I had only played it for 1 more minute when i first tested the crack I would have realized this earlier! Sorry everybody if I led you all astray.  It now appears the crack is rather useless!!
