if you're talking about Need For Speed Underground 2, there should be no XP patch because the game was "intended" for XP (it actually fails to run on Win98), so the only problem i can think of is:
- You failed the hardware specs test, meaning that your computer is "not good enough" to run the game (e.g. your video card is too slow/doesn't have enough memory) and such, OR - You received a copy... The CD was just burned, and needs a crack to work... and i may be very very wrong on these two.....

i had the same prob with both nfs underground and nfs underground 2, and for some reason, when i used the no-cd patches they both worked perfectly. Its very possible that you need to update your graphics driver to handle the game. EA's email support tends to be pretty good, maybe you should give them a shot.
