Im thinkin its your chip. Magic 3.1's were pretty crappy in their day. And had problems booting up quite a few games. If your happy with a chip that just boots backups then get a Duo2 SE, they're hella cheap and fairly easy to install. Plus they work great with every game so far on the ps2.
