I found that No CD 1.0 via GCW only works with XP.
Version 1.4 does work on XP SP1, but maybe not on XP SP2. Could anyone confirm this?
Anyway, to solve the CreateProcess error, I need your kernel32.dll. Please send it to hijack_hl2********fr with a description of your Windows version.

I've had the same problem and couldn't find the cause. The only workaround I've found yet is to unpack the localized GCF file. To do that:
* Download and install GCFScape
* Open <steam directory>/steamapps/half-life 2_<language>.gcf
* Extract hl2 to <steam directory>/steamapps/<your account>/half-life 2
* Close GCFScape

This problem doesn't seem to be directly related with my nocd. For example, the same thing happens when you delete the file ClientRegistry.blob.
Has any localized user had the same problem with my nocd?

You can also extract hl2.exe by yourself from the file "source engine.gcf" using GCFScape. The unprotected exe is included in the game they sold you but it's disabled. You simply enabled it.

I don't think they'll ever release a solution by themself. That would break their contract with Vivendi.
I think they'll tolerate this nocd because it makes many customers happy, including people who simply couldn't play the game. Blocking this nocd would only make Vivendi happy.
If they tolerate it, they'll have less DVD drive incompatibility issues, less DVD returns because the dog scratched it, etc.

You must run hijack_hl2.exe in the steam directory. You can also use a shortcut to hijack_hl2.exe with the steam directory in the "Directory" field.

It still works for me. You (or Steam) must have changed something. Version 1.4 won't change anything unless you're using Win2k.
Edit: But I don't know about offline mode. Is anyone using it successfully?

Neither the Steam update nor the Half-Life 2 update affected my ability to use hijack's fix.

hijack, a thought occured to me.

The hl2.exe included in your noCD archive is Valve's copyright. You don't have a license to distribute it. You might get into legal trouble for it.

If you were to remove it, anyone with an installed retail copy of the game could still easily get the file, as the unmodified, SecuROM-free version of the executable is included in source engine.gcf. Just grab GCFScape and extract to the Steam directory.

(I made sure that this works. I overwrote the hl2.exe from your archive with one extracted from my steam engine.gcf. Playing Half-Life 2 sans DVD in drive right now).

Just a thought. At the very least, it would give noCD naysayers one less point to argue.

I just set up the patch and it worked, but after restarting because my firewall kicked in, it now is asking for the DVD. The only difference I can think of is I am now using a shortcut on the desktop, not on the actual file in the Steam directory. Is there any reason why? Or at least, what can be done to fix this?

BTW, anyone know how to make Steam not automatically run when I start the PC? I'd rather launch it myself...

There's also the fact I am wondering how HL2 updates, I haven't seen anything about this, but there was supposedly an update earlier today and haven't seen any mention of it while I was running it just now.

Thanks!

EDIT: I was right! Using the patch and not the shorcut is working. However, now I have another problem:

Anyone know which files are trying to access the internet BTW? No matter how I setup my firewall, it keeps coming up as the game is loading on the main page and causes the PC to crash. I could turn it off, but don't plan to if I am going to be online at the same time. Can't get the offline mode to work, so call me confused...

I am using hijacks very first crack he posted, with Win Xp and SP2! Since using this crack I have always played in Offline Mode and have never again let it connect to Steam to Update! And so far absolutely no problems with the game or Crack. (And I finished the game today)
To whoever asked about how to stop Steam from starting when windows starts (Cant remember who asked this) but there must be a way of stopping it as it doesnt start when I start my system.
To whoever asked about the shortcut on the Desktop? I start Hl2 from a shortcut on Desktop (but then mine hasnt been updated!) I actually copied the shortcut that installed originally on the desktop from the retail version and changed the properties to point to and start Hijacks exe! That way the icon still looks the same as the original.
And one last thing the game finishes with................................... Just teasin!
