How to tell what rom you have in your xbox

How can I tell what rom I have in my xbox without taking it apart? I get alot of dirty disc erorrs. I have cleaned the drive and some disk. I get it with both the orginal disks and backed up disk. Does it matter what drive I put back in the box if I buy a new one.
