One thing you should remember is that the ingame graphics can be a seperate issue to the menus. The menus can be running at a default resolution (640x480@60hz or in some cases your desktop rez), while the ingame graphics would run at the resolution you set, plus the frequency you picked or that of your desktop. Laptops have an "optimal" desktop resolution (most times 1280 by 768/1024), and the ingame graphics could be either beyond your laptops capable resolution (and that can go either way), or just not syncing correctly. Try to set your desktop rez to the rez you are picking for the game, or vice versa.
