RBR does use SSE extensions.
Prior to the 1.6GHz Palamino core, Athlon processors used the 3DNow! instruction set which contained about 20% of the Intel SSE instructions. With the introduction of the Athlon 4 (XP) 1.6GHz and above, including the lower-clocked Durons released at the same time, the additional instructions were added to the CPU architecture bringing them up to full SSE support. This is why a CPU prior to an AthlonXP can't run the game and why some people with Durons less than 1.6GHz can run the game. Pentium owners have had SSE practically forever. This also explains why people with Thoroughbred cores (like me) can't even play the game if we overclock to 1.6GHz. SSE still ain't there no matter how fast the processor. Additionally however, there are known problems with SiS motherboards and KT133 chipsets that many people have resolved by applying a BIOS update. |
